How do I publish a newspaper obituary?
Death notices of up to 50 words (no photo) are published free in the Kitsap Sun for West Sound residents and former residents. Notices that include a photo, and/or those notices that exceed 50 words in length, are considered paid obituary packages. Obituaries must be submitted by noon the day before the requested publication date, except for those notices that are requested for Sunday and Monday editions (for which the deadline is 2 p.m. on Fridays). What are the laws for scattering ashes in Washington?
You can scatter cremated remains on any private land with permission. To scatter on National Park land you need permission from the Chief Park Ranger. For state trust uplands you need permission from the regional manager. You should scatter ashes on the ground at least 100 yards from any trail, road, building, or waterway. Memorial markers are not permitted and publicity of the scattering is not allowed.
You may scatter in the Puget Sound, Pacific Ocean, Lake Washington, or any inland water within the 3-mile limit enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency. Such scatterings should be reported to the EPA within 30 days.
Washington State Ferries also allow scattering. Please provide a 3-5 day notice for a scattering memorial service. Ceremonies can only take place during non-peak sailing times & if weather conditions permit. Ashes must be in a biodegradable container.
